Histoire ancienne jusqu'à César (BL Stowe MS 54)

The Greeks attack Troy, f. 83r.

Colloquial name(s): Histoire ancienne jusqu'à César
Official name(s): British Library, Stowe MS 54

Date:  1st quarter of 15th Century (source)
Origin: Paris, Central France (source)

This manuscript was copied by a French scribe from BL Royal 20 D I, a Neapolitan exemplar of c. 1340 (source). BNF Fr. 301 was also copied in France from this same exemplar (source). The manuscript was owned by Béraud III of Clermont-Sancerre (b. 1350, d. 1426) - his emblem of a basket encircled with a crown and suspended on a thorn branch appears on f. 414v (source). It was also at some point in the 15th Century owned by Seigneurs d'Esgreville - his arms appear on their own on f. 1v and dimidiated with those of his wife on f. 2r (source).

The manuscript was illustrated by a Netherlandish artist working in Paris, possibly that also associated with BL Sloane 2433 (source). It is illustrated with four large full-page miniatures, two large half-page miniatures and 31 small miniatures (source).

Basic descriptions of the illustrations are provided by the British Library with the facsimile.
