La Prise de Defur (The Taking of Defur) is an anonymous 13th Century poem (source) whilst Les Voeux du Paon (The Vows of the Peacock) is a chanson de geste written by Jacques de Longuyon for Thibaut de Bar, bishop of Liège in 1312 (source). Voeux du Paon was one of the most popular romances of the 14th Century (source). It spawned sequels, including Le Restor du Paon (The Peacock Restored), written by Jean le Court (source). In 1340, the wealthy Parisian goldsmith Simon de Lille commissioned the poet Jean de la Mote to compose another addition to the Peacock Cycle, Le Parfait du Paon (The Perfect Peacock) (source). All of these romances are brought together in this manuscript.

Basic descriptions of the illustrations are provided by the BNF with the facsimile.
