Compilation Française D'histoire Ancienne (BNF NAF 3576)

Hannibal and his troops besiege a castle, f. 150r.

Colloquial name(s): Compilation française d'histoire ancienne, depuis la création du monde jusqu'à la mort de Jules César (French compilation of ancient history from the creation of the world to the death of Julius Caesar)
Official name(s): Bibliothèque nationale de France, NAF 3576

Date: 14th Century (source), likely c. 1340-70 based on illustrations
Origin: France (source)

This manuscript has very similar illustration styles to that of BNF Fr. 246BL Royal 16 G VII, and Dublin, Chester Beatty Library, ms. 74 (source). All of these contain an iconographic cycle and similar decoration, colour choices, borders, program of illustrations and frontispieces (source). It is thought that they are the work of the Parisian workshops of the third quarter of the 14th Century (source).

At the end of this manuscript (f. 345) are the signatures of 'Loys de Luxembourg' and 'Philippe de Clèves', along with the arms and motto of the latter (source).
