The Golf Book (BL Add. MS 24098)

September, men play a game similar to golf, f. 27r.

Colloquial name(s): the Golf Book
Official name(s): British Library Additional MS 24098

Date: c. 1540 (source)
Origin: Bruges, Netherlands

Online facsimile available via: British Library Digitised Manuscripts

This manuscript consists of leaves removed from a Book of Hours (now lost), which are not in the original order (source). It is thought to have been made in Bruges, Netherlands, perhaps for a Swiss patron, as suggested by the miniature of Boniface of Lausanne and the subsequent provenance (source).

The manuscript contains 21 full-page miniatures in colours and gold plus 40 other historiated full and partial borders (source). The miniatures are attributed to Simon Bening (d. 1561) and his workshop (source). It has gained the name of the 'Golf Book' due to the presence of a miniature on f. 27r which includes four men playing a game that resembles golf (source).

Basic descriptions of the illustrations are provided by the British Library with the facsimile.
