The story of Patient Griselda was widely known in the medieval period, her story having been included in Boccaccio's Decameron, Petrarch's De Obidentia ac fide uxoria and in an Anglicised version within the Clerk's Tale of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales (source). It tells of how the Marquis of Saluzzo chooses Griselda, a peasant girl, for his wife and proceeds to test her obedience through a series of trials (source and source).

This manuscript contains a number of black-and-white ink drawings illustrating the story.
