Butler Hours (Walters Art Museum, Ms. W. 105)

Man and woman kneel whilst priest celebrates Mass, f. 15r.
Colloquial name(s): Butler Hours
Official name(s): Walters Art Museum, Ms. W. 105

Date: mid-14th Century (source), c. 1350 (source)
Origin: England (source)

Online facsimile available via: The Digital Walters

This manuscript was likely made for William le Boteler, the 3rd Lord of Wem (d. 1369) (source). The Butler Hours has not made it through its life entirely unscathed - it suffered heavy water damage, likely when the owner's London house was flooded in 1846 (source). Several areas of the manuscript have been retouched by 19th Century artists, including the face of Edward Grim (the priest) in the scene of Thomas Becket's martyrdom on f. 14r (source).
