The Shaftesbury Psalter (BL Lansdowne MS 383)

Mowing (June), f. 5v.

Colloquial name(s): the Shaftesbury Psalter
Official name(s): British Library, Lansdowne MS 383

Date: 2nd quarter of the 12th Century (source)
Origin: England (source)

Online facsimile available via: British Library Digitised Manuscripts

This manuscript was possibly created for Queen Adeliza of Leuven, widow of Henry I, following a Shaftesbury model at the Benedictine nunnery of St. Edward, Shaftesbury, Dorset (source). This is hypothesised as St. Edward is prominent in the calendar and as the litany and wording of the prayers are for female use (source).

The psalter is preceded by a calendar, an Easter table and a cycle of full-page miniatures and is followed by Canticles, a Litany, Collects and various longer prayers (source). It is decorated with 8 full-page miniatures, 3 full borders, 1 full-page diagram, 12 caldenar historiated 'KL' initials with zodiac roundels, 1 full-page historiated Beatus initial, 3 large historiated initials, 6 large initials with foliate decoration - all of which are in colours and gold (source).

Basic descriptions of the illustrations are provided by the British Library with the facsimile.
